A Surprisingly Simple Learning Hack

At the core of every successful organization lies a shared passion for excellence and a commitment to growth. Communities of Practice embody this ethos, bringing together individuals united by a common pursuit to refine their skills and deepen their knowledge. The structure of CoP is elegantly simple, yet profoundly impactful, involving a domain of interest, a community that nurtures relationships, and the practice of shared experiences and resources.

Cultural transformation isn’t achieved through memos or mandates; it blossoms from the shared experiences and continuous engagements of the people within an organization. CoPs facilitate this organic growth, enabling members to integrate new ideas and behaviors into the company’s cultural fabric. Through our work with diverse organizations, we've observed how CoPs have sparked a renaissance of corporate cultures, making them more dynamic, inclusive, and resilient.

The idea of CoP dates back to ancient guilds where craftspeople honed their skills through shared practices. This concept was academically explored by Etienne Wenger and Jean Lave in their 1991 landmark study, indicating the natural formation of CoPs in various environments for collective learning. Today’s approach can build on these foundational insights, adapting them to contemporary organizational settings.

Knowledge sharing is the cornerstone of innovation and CoP provides the perfect ecosystem for this exchange. In CoPs, dialogue flows freely, questions spark discovery, and insights fuel collective problem-solving. Our master facilitators at Voltage Control have seen firsthand the magic that happens when a team member's 'eureka' moment becomes a catalyst for the group's advancement. Research shows that CoPs drive organic growth by enabling members to integrate new ideas into an organization's culture.

The journey to cultivating a thriving CoP starts with identifying the shared interests that resonate with your team. Facilitating engagement is next, where open dialogue and collaborative experiences are key. Providing ample resources and acknowledging contributions will further empower the community. Through this nurturing, a CoP can evolve into an organization's compass, guiding it through the complexities of the business world.

The future of work is undeniably collaborative. CoPs represent a fundamental shift in work and learning dynamics. Our commitment to this vision is exemplified in our own community development at Voltage Control, where we are creating an ecosystem of knowledge, support, and inspiration. We’ve been quietly and diligently crafting Facilitation Lab Community Hub, our very own CoP, one that embodies our facilitation values. With our soft launch already underway, we are building and iterating alongside some of our most active community members. This environment is more than a network; it's a living, breathing ecosystem of knowledge, support, and inspiration. Our members, who are facilitators and collaborative leaders across numerous organizations, now find themselves immersed in the same community dynamic we champion.

As you contemplate the role of CoPs in your organization, remember that within your teams lies a reservoir of untapped potential, waiting to be set free through collective endeavor. We invite you to embark on this journey with us, exploring the vast possibilities that CoPs can unlock.

From Classroom to Conference Room

In this blog post, Susan Golab Wilson shares an insightful facilitation experience. Faced with passive participation, she shifted the meeting format to a standing gathering around a SMART board. This move broke down barriers, encouraging the team to actively engage and collaboratively highlight key factors in their project. The result was a co-constructed idea, leveraging each member's strengths and advocating for unheard voices. This collaborative success reinvigorated Susan’s passion for facilitation and helped her overcome imposter syndrome, ready to embrace new challenges.
