You’ve seen the headlines. A mass exodus is underway by America’s workforce dubbed The Great Resignation. Nearly half of workers are on the lookout for new career opportunities according to a recent Gallup analysis. Not only has the pandemic shifted the way people work, but it’s also changed the way they view work.
Employees are now prioritizing passion over pay. As the Gallup data shows, it's not an industry, role, or pay issue. It's a workplace issue. The research finds that it takes more than a 20 percent pay raise to entice employees away from a leader who engages them, and next to nothing to poach disengaged workers. In order to hold on to employees, organizations need leaders who actively engage, who truly care, and who give workers a sense of purpose. Purpose is one of our top mantras at Voltage Control.
I’ve discussed the historic quitting spree with clients and many fear losing top talent. While their concerns are valid, I see this as an opportunity for leaders to improve employee experiences helping them discover meaning in every project and contribution. As the world’s stressors alter and evolve, it’s easy for teams to feel stuck in life or lose sight of the big picture. You need strategies that pull everyone’s attention back to your overarching goal and demonstrate that they are part of a mission.
Meetings are the heart of your company culture because it’s where teams build this synergy and alignment. Every meeting needs to be infused with authentic inspiration and shared visions without false harmony or toxic positivity. With nearly eighteen months of Zoom meetings for some, it’s crucial to evaluate your current meeting culture and systems immediately. Meetings don’t need to leave any of us feeling discouraged or disconnected. Instead, we can leave feeling energized and accomplished.
Meetings shouldn’t be mundane. They can be truly magical.
We’ve captured and enhanced this magic throughout our work at Voltage Control. To help teams overcome burnout and create their own meeting magic, I wrote Magical Meetings–my latest book that highlights Voltage Control’s meeting mantras based on systems we know work. Because I geek out on magical meetings of all shapes and sizes, I also started to collect other peoples' Magical Meeting Storiesas an extension of the book. I'd love to hear your great meeting story! Tell me about your wizardry here.
With the right meeting mindset, collaboration tools, and engagement structure, you have the potential to turn this monumental moment in history into The Great Retention.
